Gus Barreiro was awarded the Claude T. Kirk Humanitarian Award by The Official White House Boys
Organization on Saturday April 10, 2010. This award was for his help in exposing the abuse that took
place at the Dozier School for Boys, an action that cost him his job. Gus,however, had been a child
advocate for years before Dozier and stood up for the rights of children under the care of the State of
Florida, even when it opposed the views of his peers. He is, and always will be, a courageous man who
fears not the censure of the Florida government or the personal cost of taking a stand against abuse in
any form where the children of Florida are concerned.
