This story is based on more than 8,000 documents obtained under the state's public records laws, including
e-mails, internal incident reports, grievances filed by boys at the school, personnel records, surveillance video and
DCF investigative summaries. For months, the Times was denied access to the school, its students and its staff.
Friday afternoon, as this story was headed to publication, officials with the Department of Juvenile Justice agreed to
schedule a visit.
